Community and Critique: SEAF 2017/2018
This exhibition represents a culmination of a year-long engagement in the Salama bin Hamdan Emerging Artists program (SEAF). The Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation (SHF), in partnership with the Rhode Island School of Design, welcomes a group of emerging artists from across the UAE to participate in this unique educational program designed to encourage and foster artistic growth and development.

The SEAF program consists of four pillars; the artistic development process, the critique process, the immersive studio practice, and an online community for participating artists. Through on-site teaching in Abu Dhabi, an educational visit to the United States, mentoring, online discussions, and 24/7 access to their studio throughout the year, Fellows are able to develop their artistic skills, establish a greater understanding of their own work and its influences, and strengthen their ability to articulate their ideas.
Community and critique are mutually supportive where rigorous inquiry, analysis, and reflection support the advancement of content and form in one’s process and work. Access to materials, techniques, and methods support the development of ideas, and form reveals itself through multiple iterations of the work itself. As we finish the program’s fifth year with enthusiasm and a commitment to the future of the program, we reflect on its impact on individuals, as well as on its role in the UAE’s vibrant and ever evolving artistic community.
Fellowship suggests togetherness. These sixteen artists have worked side by side all year in a studio-based community, supporting one another by exchanging knowledge and critical dialogue along the way. Bringing their works into Warehouse421 means stepping outside the intimacy of the SEAF studios, into the culture and community of the city. Presenting their work in a professional space provides an opportunity to share and speak about it with others; and thus becomes an important moment within their continuing process.
